Getting started with SupaPop
SupaPop lets you build popups, quizzes, and surveys that capture emails and drive conversions on your Shopify store. This guide walks you from a fresh install to a live popup: create it, edit the design, turn on the theme app embed, and go live.
Before you start
You need a Shopify store with the SupaPop app installed. After installing, you land on the Popups page, which is the app home page. If you have no popups yet, you will see a Get started with SupaPop checklist with the main steps you need.
One thing to set up early: SupaPop needs a theme app embed turned on before any overlay popup can show on your storefront. Step 4 below covers this. If you only build standalone-page quizzes, you can skip the embed (more on that in Tips).
How to create your first popup
-
On the Popups page, click Create popup. This opens the Create a new popup picker.
-
The picker is organized into tabs by what you want to build. Pick the tab that fits:
- Start from scratch gives you a blank 3-step popup (capture, survey, thank you) to build yourself.
- Quizzes are multi-step quizzes that ask questions and route to a recommendation or offer (for example the Product Recommendation Quiz).
- Email & SMS are lead-capture popups: email and SMS opt-in, discounts, and spin-to-win or scratch-card games (for example the Coupon Capture Popup).
- Post-purchase are surveys that show on your Shopify thank-you page after checkout.
Inside each tab, every option is tagged Ready-made (a complete quiz or popup with the steps and copy already written, ready to edit and publish), Style (a ready-made look you add your own steps to), or Gamified (a spin-to-win or scratch-card game).
-
For most templates, a Where will visitors see this? screen appears next. Pick one:
- Popup overlay on your storefront shows the popup over your store pages.
- Standalone page (own URL) gives the quiz its own link instead of an overlay.
- Feedback survey (popup overlay, no email) is an overlay tuned for feedback.
You can change this later in the editor under Container settings.
Every new popup starts as a draft named New Popup. After you create it, SupaPop opens the popup detail page.
How to edit the design
- On the popup detail page, click Edit design at the top of the page. This opens the section editor.
- The editor has three panels: the section list on the left, a live preview in the center, and a settings panel on the right. Step tabs run along the top.
- Click any section to edit it on the right. Click + Add section to add new ones (such as Image, Text, Form, or Button). Click + Add Step to add another step.
- Drag sections or steps to reorder them.
- Use the Mobile and Desktop toggle above the preview to check both views.
- Your edits save as drafts automatically when you switch to another section or step. There is no per-field save button. Because of this, the section you are currently editing is only saved once you switch away from it or click Publish, so switch sections or publish before you leave the editor or that section’s latest edits can be lost. An Unpublished changes badge appears when you have drafts waiting.
- When you are happy, click Publish changes in the editor header. A Published to storefront message confirms it.
Publishing copies your draft design to the live version. Until you publish, your storefront keeps showing the last published design.
How to turn on the theme app embed
Overlay popups need the SupaPop app embed enabled in your theme.
- On the Popups page, a banner about enabling SupaPop appears whenever the embed is off. Click Enable in Theme Editor (or use the Open Theme Editor link in the onboarding checklist). The same banner appears on a popup’s detail page once that popup is live.
- Shopify opens the theme editor with the App embeds section open. In the left sidebar under App embeds, toggle SupaPop Popup on.
- Click Save in the theme editor. The toggle alone does not save it.
If you do not have the deep link, go to Online Store > Themes > Customize, click App embeds in the left sidebar, toggle SupaPop Popup on, and click Save.
How to go live and preview
Going live and publishing your design are two separate actions.
- On the popup detail page, click Go live at the top. This switches the popup from draft to live. The button changes to Pause while the popup is live. You can also use Go live / Pause on each row of the Popups list.
- To check it, click Preview at the top of the detail page. This opens your storefront with the popup forced to show. For a standalone-page popup, the same button opens the popup’s own share page instead.
For a standalone-page popup, the detail page shows a Share link section with Copy link and Open buttons. That link is the URL you share; the popup does not appear as an overlay.
Tips
- Publish vs Go live are different. Publish changes pushes your design edits live. Go live changes the popup status so it can show. A new popup is a draft, so publishing the design alone will not make it appear. Going live with unpublished edits shows the older published design.
- The storefront preview shows your last published design, not unsaved edits. Click Publish changes first, or the preview will not reflect your latest work. The center preview in the editor is the only place drafts render.
- Overlay previews need the embed. If the SupaPop Popup embed is off, the storefront preview shows nothing, which can look broken. Standalone-page previews do not need the embed.
- Preview links expire. A preview link works for about 30 to 60 minutes. If it stops showing the popup, open Preview again from the admin for a fresh link.
- Only one popup shows per page view. If two overlay popups target the same pages, only the older one (by creation date) appears.
- Closing a popup is not permanent. A visitor who closes it sees it again on the next page load, based on your trigger rules.
- Preview activity is not counted. Preview sessions are excluded from your analytics and do not count toward your billable visitor total.
- You cannot edit a popup while an A/B experiment is running on it. The editor is locked until the experiment stops.
Troubleshooting
My popup is live but does not show on my store. This almost always means the SupaPop Popup app embed is not enabled. Open the theme editor, toggle it on under App embeds, and click Save. Also confirm the popup status is live and that another, older popup is not the one matching the page first.
The preview opens but nothing appears. For overlay popups, check that the app embed is enabled. If the preview link is more than an hour old, reopen Preview from the admin to get a fresh one.
I published but the store still shows the old design. Make sure you clicked Publish changes in the editor (not just Go live), then refresh your storefront.
A standalone-page popup never appears on my store. That is expected. Standalone-page popups have their own URL and never show as an overlay. Use the Share link on the detail page. You can switch the mode later in the editor under Container settings.
