Enabling SupaPop in your theme
Overlay popups appear on top of your store pages while shoppers browse. Before they can show, you need to switch on the SupaPop app embed in your theme. This is a one time, one switch step in Shopify. Until it is on, your overlay popups will not display, even if a popup is set live. This guide walks you through turning it on, confirming it is on, and the one thing that quietly turns it back off.
Standalone quiz pages work differently. If you built a standalone quiz, you just share its link, and it does not need the app embed. More on that at the end.
Before you start
- You need access to your Shopify admin and the ability to edit your theme.
- You only need to do this for overlay popups. Standalone quiz pages do not need it.
- You will make the change in Shopify, then save. SupaPop cannot flip this switch for you, so this step is yours to do.
How to enable the SupaPop app embed
The fastest way is to let SupaPop open the right screen for you.
- Open SupaPop. On the Popups page, look for the banner that says your popups will not display until the SupaPop app embed is enabled. Click Enable in Theme Editor. This opens your theme editor in a new tab, already focused on the SupaPop embed.
- If you do not see that banner and you are a new account, open the setup checklist on the Popups page and click Open Theme Editor on the first step.
- In the theme editor, find the App embeds area in the left sidebar.
- Toggle SupaPop Popup on.
- Click Save. This is the step people miss. Toggling on does nothing until you save.
That is it. Your overlay popups can now appear on your storefront.
Manual path (no in-app link)
If you would rather navigate yourself, in Shopify go to Online Store, then Themes, then Customize. In the left sidebar, open App embeds, toggle SupaPop Popup on, and click Save.
How to confirm it is on
SupaPop tells you in two ways:
- On the Popups page setup checklist, the first step shows a green check once the embed is detected as on.
- The warning banners about enabling the embed disappear once it is detected as on.
SupaPop checks your live, published theme each time you open the Popups page. If you just enabled and saved the embed, reload the Popups page to refresh the check.
Tips
Save, do not just toggle. In your theme editor, flipping the App embeds toggle changes nothing until you click Save. If you toggle on and leave the page, the change is discarded and your popups still will not show.
It is per theme. This is the big one. Shopify stores app embeds inside each individual theme. Enabling SupaPop on one theme does not enable it on another. So if you switch your published theme to a different theme, or install and publish a brand new theme, that theme may not have the SupaPop embed enabled. Your overlay popups will quietly stop showing until you enable and save the embed on the theme you are now publishing. Nothing warns you when this happens, so make checking the embed part of every theme change.
Standalone quiz pages do not need this. If you built a standalone quiz, you just share its link. It does not appear as an overlay on your storefront, and it does not depend on the app embed. If you enabled the embed but built a standalone popup, that is why you see nothing overlaying your store. That is expected, the quiz lives at its own shareable link.
Post purchase surveys are set up elsewhere. Surveys on the Shopify thank you page are not controlled by this app embed. They are set up in a separate place in Shopify, where you add the SupaPop block to your thank you page, and SupaPop shows its own reminder for that. So enabling the theme app embed does not affect them, and vice versa.
Troubleshooting
I enabled and saved the embed, but a popup still shows a warning. A live popup’s detail page uses the last result SupaPop saw, not a fresh real time check. Open the Popups page to refresh the check, then return to the popup. The warning should clear.
I set my popup live but it does not appear on my store. First, confirm the popup is an overlay popup and not a standalone quiz page, since standalone pages never overlay your store. Then confirm the SupaPop embed is on and saved in your currently published theme. When you click Go live on an overlay popup while the embed is off, SupaPop warns you in the success message that the popup is live but will not display until you enable SupaPop under App embeds in your theme editor.
The popup vanished after I changed themes. This is the per theme behavior above. The theme you just published may not have the embed enabled. Enable SupaPop under App embeds in that theme and click Save.
No warning shows, but I am still not sure it is on. SupaPop only shows the warning when it can confirm the embed is off. If its check could not run, no warning appears, which does not by itself prove the embed is on. To be sure, open your theme editor, confirm SupaPop Popup is toggled on under App embeds, and that you saved.
